About Us
The Department’s aim is to provide an outstanding student experience, generate world class research that is critical and innovative, and offer a collegial and supportive environment that makes coming to work fun.
Our teaching and research relates to four subject disciplines: Politics, Modern History, International Relations and European Studies. We explore the political, economic, social and cultural transformations taking place in modern Britain, mainland Europe and the wider world. We seek to maintain our international reputation for research excellence through publications, collaborations and presentations. The Department has well-established links with a wide range of partner Universities and is embedded in scholarly networks throughout the UK and overseas.
We draw on the Social Sciences and Humanities to offer students varied perspectives on our core subjects; we also offer a range of exciting opportunities for those who wish to internationalise and professionalise their degrees, including foreign language skills and study abroad.
We aim to provide an intellectually stimulating environment for students in which they develop critical, creative and independent thinking, and develop transferable competence and practical skills. We are earning a national reputation for using cutting-edge, exciting and engaging teaching and learning technologies. These initiatives form an integral part of our strategy of promoting excellence and new initiatives in learning and teaching, and in promoting a sense of community and identity among our students.
