Best Department for Global Development
The PHIR Department's commitment to internationalisation was recognised at the 2011 Global Award ceremony organised by Loughborough's Students Union by receiving the 'Best Department for Global Development' award.
The nominations for the award stated that it should go to 'Any department that has gone above and beyond to support and promote international experiences whether working, studying or being on a placement abroad.'
As the award was presented, the following statement was made:
"The PHIR Department is at the centre of internationalisation at Loughborough University. Not only does it offer students and non-students extra-curricular language classes, provide a range of modules with a regional focus such as South Asian Studies and Contemporary French Politics, but has fostered and continues to foster relationships with foreign universities in Europe, and as of this year, Asia. This year the department has increased the total number of Loughborough students interested in taking part in the Erasmus Mundus program (from 3 to 28), and successfully bid for funding for a one-year internship devoted to Loughborough University's internationalisation. Each year, a trip to Brussels is arranged by the department, allowing Loughborough students to see the workings of the European Parliament, meet with British MEPs and experience the home-city of the EU. PHIR stands out as the department which has done most to promote Loughborough as a place for international students, and provide a way for home students to “Experience the World”."
