Inaugural lectures

Professor Colin Garner

Wednesday June 2, 2010 at 5.30pm - Lecture Theatre T.0.03, Wolfson Building

How far can we go with the internal combustion engine?

Professor Colin Garner

In his lecture, Professor Garner, the Perkins/Royal Academy of Engineering Professor of Applied Thermodynamics, will discuss the future of the internal combustion (IC) engine.

There are currently over 1 billion IC engines in the world, and they have a profound impact on our economy, environment and way of life.

Professor Garner will look at why the IC engine is so successful. He will present some examples of novel research at Loughborough University and elsewhere that has contributed significantly to reducing IC engine emissions and fuel consumption and that has helped us understand better their complex behaviour.

He will look at important issues ranging from the microscopic design of engine components to global geopolitics. He will discuss some alternative forms of vehicle propulsion and how the IC engine will play its role in driving our future.
