Peter's mobile communicator highly commended at'design Oscars'

Peter Daniel, a final year industrial design and technology student at Loughborough, has been highly commended by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (RSA) for his design of a state of the art mobile communicator for leading manufacturer Sony.

The judging panel were 'impressed with the high standard of work' that Peter expressed in his challenging project; to produce a design concept that meets the demands of the rapidly changing world of mobile communication. 'The product allows the user to express themselves through interchangeable fascias, as well as full colour picture messaging, motion video and 3D sound,' said Peter. In addition to appealing to the image conscious, Peter's communicator design is crammed full of functional and security features for the gadget fan. 'Fingerprint security is activated by touching a rollerball, there's built-in help libraries, a dictionary, and the option of linking up to your home computer,' he added. And for those who scoff at the prospect of internet access on a screen so small it's hardly worth it, Peter's mobile communicator features a colour screen that's a healthy 10cm2.

With a roll of honour that includes fashion designer Betty Jackson and iMac designer Jonathan Ive, RSA Student Design Awards are widely tipped as the showcase for UK's future designers. Over 2,500 students entered this year's competition, which covers a wide spectrum of disciplines including product, graphics, engineering and packaging. Peter has had no time to let success go to his head, as he is currently working hard for his major degree project with fellow finalist, Ian Gilmour. They are designing a programmable buggy for primary school children that teaches programming skills as part of the National Curriculum. The buggy and a host of other captivating designs will be on show to the public at the Industrial Design and Technology Degree Show, at the Great Hall, Epinal Way, from Saturday 9 to Tuesday 12 June.
