Sports awards for Loughborough trio
Loughborough student Caitlin McClatchey, graduate Lisa Dobriskey, and
Ross Davenport, who trains full time in the Loughborough swim programme,
were presented with awards last night (27 November) at the BBC East Midlands
Sports Awards 2006.
Swimmer Caitlin McClatchey, who is studying Politics at the University, won the Sportswoman of the Year award. Caitlin won two Golds at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne earlier this year – in the 200m Freestyle, setting a British and Commonwealth record, and the 400m Freestyle. She also won Bronze in the 400m Freestyle at the European Championships held in Budapest in August.
Lisa Dobriskey, who graduated from the University last year but still trains with Loughborough’s renowned athletics director George Gandy, was presented with the Brian Clough Breakthrough Award. Lisa brought home Gold in the Women’s 1,500m at this year’s Commonwealth Games.
Ross Davenport was voted Sports Personality of the Year by viewers and listeners to BBC Local Radio in the East Midlands and East Midlands Today. Ross won two Golds at the Commonwealth Games, in the 200m Freestyle and the 4x200m Freestyle Relay, and Silver in the 4x100m Freestyle Relay.
Chris Earle, Loughborough's Director of Sport, said: "We are delighted that our athletes have been recognised with these awards. They are a real testament to their hard work and commitment."
Loughborough-based GB badminton doubles coach Andy Wood was also honoured at the ceremony, receiving the Coach of t he Year award. In the last 12 months he has coached his players, who include Loughborough graduate Donna Kellogg, to gold medals at the World and European Championships and Commonwealth Games.
The awards, which were announced at a glittering ceremony at the Assembly Rooms in Derby, were sponsored by Sport England East Midlands and were presented by BBC TV’s John Inverdale and a team of celebrity guest presenter.
